Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards in Mizzou’s win over Florida.
After a tough loss to Mississippi State in Week 4, the Missouri Tigers are now back in the win column following a 45-17 win against No. 8 Florida. Not only was this Eli Drinkwitz’s first regular-season victory against an AP top-10 opponent, but this game snapped a 16-game losing streak against top-10 foes. The last regular-season win against a top-10 opponent for the Tigers came in 2013 when they defeated No. 7 Georgia. This is fairly new territory that the Tigers have not experienced in over a decade.
The Tigers offense put on a clinic against this Florida defense, with all of their top playmakers putting up quality stat lines. Tigers quarterback Austin Simmons continues to impress week after week, showing that he is one of the conference’s top quarterbacks. The lefty gunslinger had 340 yards on 23 completions, along with two touchdowns through the air.
The Tigers’ wide receiver room has been very dependable so far this season. Cayden Lee had his second consecutive game with 100-plus yards, and Donovan Olugbode’s touchdown marked his fifth score in five straight games. Caleb Goodie also had a 31-yard touchdown.
The absence of Ahmad Hardy did not seem to matter in this effort for the Tigers, and it felt like backup running back Jamal Roberts was waiting for this opportunity his entire career. The back exploded for 211 yards on 24 carries and reached the end zone three times. This was a dominant display of football in every aspect of the game for the Tigers.
The Gators offense never had a chance to settle in throughout this game due to Mizzou’s defensive attack. Although the Tigers were missing their two starting pass rushers in Darris Smith and Langden Kitchen, they were still able to rack up three sacks and 16 quarterback pressures.
Florida’s Heisman hopeful running back Jadan Baugh was shut down completely in this game, finishing with only 13 yards on 12 carries. The Tigers defense forced Gators QB Aaron Philo to beat them with his arm, but he just couldn’t get it done.
