Conner Weigman is returning for his second season with the Houston Cougars.
The college football season is right around the corner and if you aren’t familiar with the Houston Cougars, now is the time to do so.
For starters, the Cougars may have one of the best receivers in the nation in Amare Thomas. Thomas logged 966 yards and 12 touchdowns on 67 receptions. He turned into one of the most explosive receivers in the Big 12 last season and, with a season of having Conner Weigman as his quarterback under his belt, more chemistry and eventual success seem inevitable.
Weigman was once a highly touted, five-star quarterback with Texas A&M. He made the move to Houston after Marcel Reed took him over on the depth chart, and he’s since made the most of it.
His first year with the Cougars resulted in him logging 2,705 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Weigman recorded 700 yards on the ground as well, along with 11 touchdowns. Last season, despite ups and downs in College Station, cemented him as a solid dual-threat quarterback.
Weigman and Thomas aren’t the only impactful players set to be on Houston’s offense, including running back Makhi Hughes and wide receivers Tuizz Mounkara and Trent Walker. That being said, the quarterback-wide receiver pairing has all the makings to be one of the best in the country.
Two matchups against Texas Tech and Utah are the only big games circled on the calendar that could prevent the Cougars from having a massive season. An upset is always possible, but losing those two could still result in a 10-2 record.
