Malachi Toney currently has a perfect 10 BiteScore on the season.
Darian Mensah just continues to prove me right at every turn. Mensah came out against a highly regarded ACC defense in Pitt and just decimated them. He threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns on 31-of-37 passing. I pushed him ahead of Smith due to the quarterback situation in Columbus. Mensah is turning the corner, gaining speed, while Jeremiah Smith is stumbling. I don’t think I’ll move Mensah from his pedestal, and I believe he’ll take home the Heisman at the end of the season.
It is such a shame that Jeremiah Smith won’t get to finish this season out with his quarterback. Smith’s final season at Ohio State will be looked at as what could have been if Julian Sayin didn’t get hurt. He could have won the Heisman, and he could have finished as the greatest college football receiver of all time. There is still time to prove me wrong, though, and if there’s any player in college football history who can overcome a bad quarterback situation, it’s Jeremiah Smith.
Malachi Toney is having one of the better wide receiver seasons that I’ve seen, and he’s not even the best this season. Many would argue he’s not even top-three. Toney deserves the same praise that Smith and Jesse Legree get, and I feel like he’s not given nearly as much recognition. I’m interested to see how the voters see Mensah and Toney, and that split could open the door for Smith or Legree. Toney had 16 catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns against Pitt. Unbelievable player, and I wonder if this time next season we’ll be talking about Toney the same way we’re currently talking about Jeremiah Smith.
4. Jesse Legree
Oregon State, the darlings of college football. Watching this team play football is such an enjoyable experience, and Jesse Legree headlines the Beavers. Even after being on a bye this week, I believe Legree still fully deserves this spot. I just wonder what Legree would have to do to win the award as a Group of 6 player. We saw one of the greatest individual statistical seasons of all time from Ashton Jeanty, and he came second to Travis Hunter. Legree would have to have an all-time great end to the season. But man, it would be fun to see him take home the highest honor in college football.
