Kenny Minchey and Byrum Brown are both entering their first season in the SEC.
Out of all 16 SEC teams, only six will have a returning starter at the quarterback position. With multiple transfer portal windows and lucrative NIL deals, turnover at the quarterback position heightens every year.
The conference’s quarterback room is led by big names such as Arch Manning, Marcel Reed and LaNorris Sellers, but there are several players that aren’t getting the coverage they deserve.
Here are the most intriguing quarterbacks in the SEC that aren’t being talked about enough ahead of the new college football season.
- Byrum Brown, Auburn
One of the most dominant quarterbacks in the country last year, Brown threw for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns last season. Not only did he control games as a passer, but he was an exceptional runner as well.
Brown was ranked fourth in rushing among all FBS quarterbacks, where he racked up over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Bulls. Brown led his team to victory against two top 25 opponents in No. 13 Florida and No. 25 Boise State. How Brown adjusts to SEC competition after transferring in from the American Conference is crucial to the team’s success this year.
He will be running it back with his coach from last year in Alex Golesh, who should help him ease the transition into the most competitive conference in football.
- Kenny Minchey, Kentucky
After three years of riding the Notre Dame bench, Minchey will finally get his shot.
Most people don’t realize that the former four-star prospect almost won the starting job last summer against Heisman favorite CJ Carr. Although he never started a game for the Irish, he was able to sit behind and learn from players like Riley Leonard and Sam Hartman.
First-year coach Will Stein has had nothing but good things to say about Minchey’s potential and how he is soaking in the scheme. The Wildcats are hoping Minchey can take control of the offense and bring them back to being competitive in the SEC.
- Kamario Taylor, Mississippi State
The Mississippi native and former four-star prospect will be at the helm for the Bulldogs this season. Taylor burst onto the scene after an impressive performance in last year’s loss to Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl. The freshman threw for 178 yards and ran for 173 more against a solid Ole Miss defense, accounting for both of State’s touchdowns on the ground.
He is electric when he has the ball in his hands, and it will be interesting to see how the sophomore can handle one of the hardest schedules in college football. His talent as a runner is undeniable, but if he can become a true dual-threat guy, Mississippi State will compete in the SEC.
