Texas Tech is building momentum on the recruiting front, securing the commitment of 2028 five-star offensive tackle Austin Attalah and getting 2027’s top recruit, Jalen Brewster, to shut down his recruitment.

“I feel like Texas Tech is the best place for me and the best place to build my own legacy,” Brewster said.

The five-star defensive lineman from Cedar Hill, Texas, committed to the Red Raiders in October 2025, headlining a top-10 class. According to On3, the Red Raiders locked Brewster down with an NIL deal worth around $1 million.

Prior to his commitment, Oklahoma and Texas were deep in the running for Brewster, but neither school could fend off its rival from Lubbock. It’s also reported that he took recent visits to Florida, LSU, Miami and Indiana.

Texas Tech has been a middling program since 2010, but 2025 was a big step up. The Red Raiders went 11-1 in the regular season, won the Big 12 for the first time in program history and made their first College Football Playoff appearance. Perhaps the biggest reason for their success has been their NIL backing, allowing them to pursue the top talent in both the transfer portal and high school recruiting.

Brewster will look to continue the recent legacy of dominant defensive linemen to play for head coach Joey McGuire and defensive coordinator Shiel Wood. They produced four draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, including the second pick in the draft, David Bailey.

The top recruit in the country should be able to make an impact early in his career, as he is widely regarded as the most dominant player in high school football at 6-foot-3, 300 pounds.

Brewster plans on graduating high school early and enrolling in the spring of 2027 to get on campus as soon as possible. That’s a trend we’ve seen become more common in recent years, as more and more guys are getting acclimated to their future homes sooner.

In the current landscape of the sport, there’s no telling how long Brewster will be suiting up in scarlet and black, but Texas Tech will likely do all it can to keep him around.

They also bolstered their roster further into the future with Attalah, who is the 21st-ranked player in the 2028 class, according to Rivals. He stands at 6-foot-8 and will play a huge role as Texas Tech continues to trend toward the top of the sport.

Whether 2025 is an outlier or not, these recruiting wins suggest that the future is bright in Lubbock.
