With the South Carolina Gamecocks coming off a 4-8 record in 2025, Shane Beamer’s job is on thin ice. A year ago, he was looking to sustain the success of a 9-4 season and had just signed a contract extension that January. He was one of the more popular coaches in college football following the team’s success in 2024, but now he is one of the most scrutinized.

It’s not easy being an SEC head coach these days. Each fanbase is longing for a national championship year after year, and one bad season can ruin everything you’ve built.

After a 30-14 loss at Ole Miss in early November, Beamer fired Offensive Coordinator Mike Shula. It was clear that the offense was an issue, as the Gamecocks finished the season ranked 104th nationally in scoring offense, averaging just 22.7 points per game.

With a glaring hole in the coaching staff, Beamer brought in Kendal Briles to be the play caller. Briles spent three seasons as TCU’s offensive coordinator and has also made coaching stops at Arkansas and Florida State. Briles brings a ‘veer and shoot’ style offense that relies on a fast tempo and mismatches. The scheme focuses on inside run plays that lead into the run-pass option. 

Quarterback LaNorris Sellers struggled in Shula’s scheme last season, which focused on traditional pocket passing and working through progressions as the play broke down. This year, Sellers will have more control of the offense and has expressed excitement for the upcoming season.

The team was able to keep a trio of star players in-house as Sellers, wide receivers Nyck Harbor and EDGE Dylan Stewart returned for 2026. Beamer will have a level of continuity at key roster spots. The Gamecocks also added 26 new faces thanks to the transfer portal, where they had the 19th-ranked portal class according to 247sports. 

The Gamecocks’ offensive line is completely revamped for the 2026 season with nine of the incoming transfers being offensive linemen. Investing in the line was a key objective of the offseason, as it was the main reason for the offensive struggles last year. The more notable names out of the group include NC State transfer Jacarrius Peak, who was a five-star out of the portal, and ECU transfer Emmanuel Poku.

The future of Shane Beamer’s tenure at South Carolina may be in question, but if you look at the investments and player retention, the support for him is evident. Roster health and offensive consistency will play a big part in an attempt to conquer the 10th-hardest schedule in the country, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.
